The BMW is known around the world. These vehicles are all class, built solid, and designed to last. But not every scanner will work for this type of vehicle, which is why Maozua set to work to come up with a unique scanner to solve that problem.
Brand-specific trouble codes can be a challenging thing to decipher for some OBD2 scanners. This is why there are tools made specifically for each brand, such as scanners for brands like BMW and Audi which are full of technologies and are known to have sophisticated issues. Maozua V7.7 Creator C310+ is a tool which allows BMW drivers to safely extract trouble codes from their BMWs, clear trouble codes and observe live data coming from their vehicles. It is a very narrow product for a somewhat narrow audience but it still is one amazing scanner which deserves recognition. In this review, we will see what it does, how well it performs and learn about its quirks and features.
Our Verdict: If you are a BMW driver who needs an OBD scanner to diagnose his car without the need of going to an authorized dealer, this scanner is ideal for you. It comes at an affordable price and does everything a budget scanner is supposed to do. If your car isn’t a BMW then we suggest getting a FOXWELL NT630 Elite which is a diagnostics powerhouse and can be used from everyday tasks to advanced diagnostics no matter the car brand.
Features That Make It Stand Out
This is a popular scanner with the BMW crowd. This is a true multitasking device that features a large, vivid display screen, and plenty of features that you can use to determine the root of your vehicle’s problem.
To start things off, let’s see what this scanner is capable of. It’s main functions are:
- To read trouble codes
- Clear those trouble codes
- Display live data graphs
- Engine Oil Light reset
- VIN-checks and vehicle information lookups
Once you open your package, you will find a lot of items inside. What’s really cool is that Maozua have included their FAQs in a file so that you can look them up and see whether any potential question of yours has been already answered.
The whole package you’re getting will include the reader, a USB cable, one CD for updates and software installation, a carry bag (which is very cool) and a user manual.
Body And Display
The C310+ comes at a comfortable form factor which is easy to hold with one hand while you’re working on your car and has a nice ergonomic shape for better grip. On it, you have a 2.8 inch LCD colored display which is vibrant enough to be visible under sunlight. The unit is lightweight, while sturdy and occasional falls on the ground won’t do much harm to it thanks to the hardened plastic casing.
It has 7 physical buttons which have a rubbery feeling to them and are very tactile. Each one facilitates navigation through the scanner’s menus.
At the bottom of the scanner there is a micro-USB port which is used to update the unit and download date from it directly onto your computer.
This is one of the few flaws of this unit, as it is specifically built to serve BMW drivers and assist them in everyday tasks such as clearing airbag codes and displaying live data from their engine department.
It works with all BMW models from 2000 onward while the 1997-2000 models will require a 20 to 16 pin adaptor which sadly isn’t included in this package. If you own an e39, e38 or e46 model from the years before 2000, make sure you get the adapter separately.
The button loaded OBD scanner isn’t the most beginner-friendly model on the market but once you get the hang of the user interface you’ll be able to easily breeze through the main menu to access the information you need. It’s also not the most versatile, considering it’s specifically designed for the BMW owner. Obviously, if you don’t own a BMW or frequently work on them, then this model isn’t for you. However, the BMW mechanic or car owner will fall in love with this scanner’s ability to get to the bottom of a problem in a matter of seconds.
If you’ve purchased a scanner for your BMW in the past, then you’ve probably struggled to get the device to work for your vehicle. Most generic scanners have issues picking up the right codes for BMWs, a problem that can be very frustrating for the car owner. Even if you own multiple scanners, it can still be difficult to find the right codes for a BMW.
Fortunately, Maozua has finally produced the scanner all BMW owners have been waiting for.
Is This Scanner Worth a Second Look?
This tool can read codes and clear them, but it will not reset the message. While the user interface can be confusing and the entire setup is not the most intuitive for beginners, this is definitely a tool that all BMW owners should have.
The device’s vivid display screen makes it much easier to read the scanner’s data, compared to lower priced black and white displays. It’s also easy to read in bright sunlight. The included user’s manual will go over how to set up the scanner and how to update the firmware when prompted. The zippered case helps to protect the screen, but if you plan on taking the scanner with you, you’ll need to place it in a hard carrying case in order to prevent serious damage to the screen in the event of an accident. The device itself doesn’t offer many extras, but in terms of quality, it scored well.
Bottom line, if you own a BMW and you’re tired of dropping a hundred dollars every time your car needs diagnostic testing, then buy this model. While this scanner isn’t quite pro quality, it can help to save you plenty of time, money, and the frustration that will inevitably come if you try to use a regular scanner for your BMW.
Keep in mind, this device will only clear a problem code if you fix the underlying cause of the code before you try clearing the code. If the issue isn’t fixed, the warning and problem code will continue to come back because the device will still detect the issue.
Since BMW is a German brand, it supports German. The product is manufactured in China, so traditional Chinese is another pre-installed language. The unit comes working in English, though, so if you need to swap for a different language you have to go to its settings or if your language isn’t there you have to download it.
The screen clearly details plenty of information in the language of your choice, allowing you to troubleshoot common BMW issues, helping you figure out exactly what’s going on with your vehicle.
If you have an F-series BMW, you will only be able to read and clear DTCs as they run on a different kind of software.
The V7.7 supports all windows versions but not the tablet ones (including iOS). If for some reason your device doesn’t support this scanner you will be able to give it back and get your money in the first 30 days. On top of that, there is a 12 months warranty which covers quality issues only.
The customer support staff is great and very responsive. Most people reported a faster than average response time. Additionally, the customer support team has a reputation for excellent troubleshooting skills have a reputation for resolving any issues quickly.
